Leveraging the power of product launch formula

Hey there,

got something for you inspired by a course I bought today, that leverages the power behind the principles taught in Jeff Walker’s product launch formula:

Basically, this course is all about leveraging the power of launches.

(at first I was almost ready to hit the refund button as I thought “oh, no, not another course that tells me to create a nice bonus package, dominate page 1 of Google for the word “[product name] bonus” or “[product name] review”).

Turns out, the course is actually all about leveraging the buzz around big launches in a totally different way:

basically, what you’re doing is create your own low-cost, stripped down version of the big ticket item and then ride the wave.

Which, when you think about it, is pure genius:

the majority of people who go for your totally stripped down version will not want to/be able to afford the big ticket item in the first place.

But: if you’re doing a GREAT job and you’re actually getting them results, they may just end up making enough money and get hooked enough on the idea of buying the big-ticket item at some point down the line, that they’ll, well, buy the big ticket item down the line.

Take product launch formula as an example: it’s a $1997 program, worth every penny in my opinion, but, only for those who want to do some serious launches (we’re talking BIG launches). For anything else, product launch formula is just too massive. Well, at least that’s my opinion.

So, this would be an ideal scenario of having a stripped down version: see a few of the principles taught in Jeff Walker’s product launch formula in action, make a few bucks, get excited, get the full-blown version of PLF.

And of course, because you did such a sterling job with the stripped down version, they might just about see you as an authority on the topic and buy through your affiliate link.

End-result: 3 happy parties: your customers because they got to sample the big idea, the seller of the big ticket item because someone bought their product and of course you because you make a little bit of money with the small, stripped down version and possibly a whole lotta more when someone buys through your affiliate link.

I really did get myself “fired” by Jeff Walker … … as an affiliate for product launch formula

See, I used to promote Jeff’s Product Launch Formula because I truly believe it to be a great product (and yes, I do own all versions up to the current one).

But then, I did the unthinkable:

in the 3-6 months in between Jeff’s “re-releases”, I did exactly what the course I mentioned above suggests, and I promoted another product which is basically a very stripped down version of PLF.

I mean really stripped down. (check out the “threat” at the top right of the sidebar)

It’s ok for launching something on a really small scale, but not really suitable for the big launches PLF was made for.

The aim of this promotion was to

• make some extra cash whilst PLF is “in the vault”, but also — and more importantly –
• build a list of people who are just getting into the product launch game — and who then at some point down the road are ready, willing and able to get a copy of the full-blown product launch formula.

But, obviously Jeff feels threatened and he doesn’t see this the same way I do:  the whole thing didn’t go down well with Jeff & his brother Jon at all, so …

I got Jeff-slapped and kicked out of the product launch formula affiliate program

(well, I’m assuming that’s what’s going on, as my affiliate account doesn’t exist anymore, I’m no longer getting the launch emails from the current launch and Jon Walker no longer responds to my emails)

So, you could of course argue that it’s naughty to promote someone else’s product when you’re using the good name of Jeff and his Product launch formula.

Or, you could argue that those who are going for the $20 version in all likelihood would never have bought the full-blown $1997 product launch formula course anyway.

But, that those who right now aren’t ready for the “big” package, well, maybe, just maybe, they are getting value out of the stripped down version, make some money with their first “small” launch, get hooked and eventually end up buying the “big” course after all.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is not to question the Walker brother’s decision to terminate my affiliate account, but more to stimulate a discussion around the topic of “competing whilst complementing”, or “building a list that eventually helps everybody”.

But, that’s not gonna stop us from seeing Jeff Walker’s product launch formula in action once again, in particular because in the past whenever Jeff Johnson (sorry, I gotta spell the names out, otherwise you’ll just get confused with all the Jeffs) used Jeff Walker’s Product launch formula, he tended to overdeliver in terms of pre-launch content as well.

To the point where I remember Jeff Walker saying to Jeff Johnson: stop giving them so much free content and start selling them something.

So, I reckon if you follow the pre-launch and suck up all of Jeff Johnson’s Traffic Voodoo 2 free prelaunch content, you’re going to be in a pretty good position traffic-wise. And of course you’ll get to see Product launch formula once again executed to the T. Enjoy

And trying to compete with the big boys for keywords such as “weight loss” just isn’t going to happen, well, not this year anyway.

So, you need to figure out what keywords people are looking for, for which there is little competition, so your site and pages rank at the top of Google very quickly.

Now, you can do it the old-fashioned way,

and use Google’s Keyword Tool to figure out what terms have enough traffic and Yahoo Site Explorer to check how competitive they are.

Or, you can take the lazy route and …

… use an internet marketing tool for this … and why not use a fantastic new FREE keyword research tool?

Some people (including myself) use Market Samurai because it is (IMO) pretty much the most complete internet marketing tool when it comes to keyword research, competition analysis and automated monetization of what you’ve found. (incidentally, they give you a free trial, well worth checking out, BUT: only download this when you’re ready to actually do some serious keyword research).

But, if

1. all you want to do is figure out what the competition is and don’t fancy going back to Yahoo Site explorer for each keyword (times each of the top 10 sites in Google) AND
2. you don’t mind that it is limited to Google (let’s be honest here: the vast majority of traffic comes from Google anyway, so getting those numbers will give you a pretty decent forecast of what to expect in “the real world” when building a list and then using Jeff Walker’s product launch formula to launch your next product or site)

then, I highly recommend you check out Ryan Deiss’ free new (not many things are better than FREE internet marketing tools;-) so-called Cherry Picker seo-tools:

This little piece of internet marketing software nothing super-fancy, all it does is take any keyword you type in, and then in real-time find out what the competition (in terms of backlinks etc) is in the top 10, 20 or 50 of Google.

In other words: if you just want a quick overview over the competition so you can figure out quickly which keywords to go after, this keyword research tool will give you exactly the information you need very quickly, nothing more, nothing less.

The nice thing about this is that — unlike Market Samurai where you have to set up a new tab for each keyword and then press a bunch of buttons,here you just type in the keyword at the top, and you’re off.

Now, one “limitation” is that it only gives you results for Google.

Let me put it this way: my search-engine optimization is pretty good and here’s the odd thing: although I don’t do things specifically for Google, when I do what is considered “good” search engine optimization, then I tend to rank really well on Google, but not on Yahoo or Bing…

So, how does this help super-charge Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula?

The Cherry Picker is plenty good enough for a quick analysis if a certain keyword is a good candidate for you to drive traffic to your squeeze page, so you can build your list and then use all the might of product launch formula to provide maximum value to that list (… and, ok, make a bunch of money in the process;-)
